I have a friend on Facebook(We'll call him Mix Master) who
lost his 14 month old boy in March (You can watch the news report here). It was a brutal attack
The little boy was at his Baby Sitters
house when the dogs attacked. The Baby Sitter (Susan) claims that her dogs were
loved, and cared for. Says she has never seen them act "Aggressive"
towards anyone.
My friend Mix Master has been posting a number of comments
saying things not in a favorable light towards Pits. He has ever right too!
He's one person that has the right to want every Pit DEAD.
Today he posted a comment "Oh
god..this just in. How horrible for this family...their family had to relocate
cause of the tornados and then this happens.” . He had a link to a video that reported how a Bull
Mastiff killed a child a few days ago. A friend of his (Leigh) commented “These dogs are in truth, more
unpredictable than actual wild animals. So heartwrenching, and people place
them in homes with kids that they would never allow a stranger near, yet this
breed is most strange. Is there not enough threats to our children today? There
are more odds that the neighborhood pit will get your child before the
neighborhood Cho Moe. Seriously.”
I thought that he
thought the Bull Mastiff was a Pit, so I commented, “The story above isn't about a Pitt-bull. Its about a Bull Mastiff.” Little
did I know but that comment started a debate that spun over 15 people putting
in their 2 cents.
Why did I feel the
need to post a comment? I was a Pit owner. She (Koko) was mixed. Rottweiler/Pit-Bull.
Remember, Pit-bull, is #1 when it comes to human attacks, Rottweiler, is #2.
You would think that having a dog mixed with 2 of the most vicious dog breeds
would be dangerous, right? I never saw it. My dog was the sweetest dog you ever
met. She got a long great with Kids, Dogs and Humans. The only thing I didn’t
like about her was she was too passive. One Halloween my friend came in the
house wearing a mask, Koko (My Pit/Rott) starting shaking and peed on the
floor. Vicious she was not!
But you might say
“Rob you were lucky”. No I wasn’t. She was raised in a loving family. Never mistreated,
and she was an inside dog. I have no ill
feelings towards Pits.
So I started adding
links to my comments with different studies pertaining to pits, and in a good
way. But everything I added, the “Pit Haters” would just shoot down. I really
doubt any of them read the links. By the time it was all said and done, there
were over 69 “Comments”, and mine were the only ones on the Pits side.
I’m not an expert on
dogs. I don’t belong to any clubs, and I’ve never done research. But do you
really think Pits are born to kill? Everyone in this Facebook post where
strongly against the saying “Its not the breed, it’s the owner”
So I want to know
what’s your opinion. I wont delete any comments, and I urge you to not hold
back. Tell it like it is.
I just read your comments on little Daxton's story. The pitbull issue is one I'm fiercely passionate about. There are many things I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole, and I tend to be more flighty than fighty, but not about this. I digress.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU for repealing your stance after a little more research, and doing so in an open forum at that. That took a lot of courage, considering how hostile pit nutters are. (And my definition of a pit nutter, for clarity, is not a pitbull fancier per se, but pit fanatics that perpetuate their dangerous myths AFTER encountering the hard facts).
Time and time again I open a dialogue with a nutter; I spoon feed facts and sources and initially am focused very hard on not coming across offensively (all bets off if they persist in perpetuating falsehoods, though)... And it is so frustrating and disturbing that all but two of them* keep coming back with the same tired nonsense. Dogma (pun intended) triumphs over innocent lives in their psychopathic list of priorities. Just last night, a nutter responded to my plea for her to read Daxton's story, the dangerous pitbull myth sticky threads on dogsbite.org (which would take only 30mins for an uber-slow reader to examine), and provided a list of blogs if she wanted to explore the issue further.... And her response was that all animals have killer instincts, all animals can attack, and shih tzus are just as dangerous. WTF are people smoking!? How could anyone insist on something like that after seeing shredded bodies and dramatic amputations??
*even so, one of the only two to not keep coming back with garbage was a childhood friend of mine. She never formally responded, though she at least stopped posting pitbull propoganda on her facebook feed.
I'm so shocked that someone could respond compassionately and open-mindedly. It's so sad that that is such a rarity. That it HAS to be unexpected.
You are a breath of fresh air and give me a little bit of optimism toward humanity.
You, sir, are living proof that brains and brawns don't have to be mutually exclusive. Thank you for speaking out.
